Community first: what building for home educating families taught us about niche audiences
A niche audience taught us more about brand building than any campaign. This is what we learned while building Homeschool Club for UK home educating families.
A small audience with a specific problem beats a big audience with none
Home educators are not a mass market. They are thousands of UK families, each facing the same sharp problem: their child needs an education that fits them, and the resources for it are scattered across a hundred places.
When we started Homeschool Club, we did not begin with a brand look or a launch plan. We began with that problem. Weekly planning, teaching support, local community and records for local authority requests, all in one place, for parents home educating children aged 4 to 11.
A big audience with no specific problem will scroll past you. A small audience with a specific problem will show up, stay and tell others. That is not a marketing trick. It is the difference between talking at people and being useful to them.
What we built
Homeschool Club is a membership that brings planning, community and days out together for UK home educating families. It includes AI weekly planning across subjects, an AI teacher that answers in plain language, a local community and events finder, weekly live classes with real teachers and records ready for local authority requests.
Membership also includes Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots digital learning programme: 20 lessons across an introduction module and six themed modules, for ages 6 to 9. We built it with the Jane Goodall Institute UK, and it carries the same care we bring to production and communications work for purpose led organisations, from The Hope Gala at The Peninsula London to the Prime Time Reset members community.
The lesson for brands and charities
Earn trust inside the community first, then scale. Every purpose led organisation we work with learns this: the communities you serve can tell the difference between being marketed to and being heard.
When we work with the Jane Goodall Institute UK on their social channels, the growth from 3,000 to 550,000 followers came from listening to one community and showing up for it consistently. Building for home educating families taught us the same thing from the other side.
If you are a brand or charity serving a niche community, start by listening. We would love to help you build for it. Get in touch and tell us who you are building for.
